DEADLINE: It’s the last day to register for the Nov. 2 election--which features the school voucher initiative and a half-cent sales tax, and, in Ventura, a City Council election. But few new voters are signing up in Ventura County, Assistant Registrar Bruce Bradley said. . . . Most local cities already have high registration figures. Exceptions: Port Hueneme (68.7%) and Oxnard (76.6%), home to military personnel who may vote elsewhere. . . . You can register today at any fire station or city hall.

VOUCHER DRIVES: Speaking of school vouchers, Ventura County opponents have been running phone banks and handing out leaflets for two weeks, said Cheryl Heitmann, local co-chair of Citizens Against 174. . . . Voucher supporters will start phoning and walking precincts this week, said Mat Higbee, of Yes on 174. . . . Local voucher backers have signed up 1,000 volunteers, he said, but there’s a problem: “A lot of people here are satisfied with their schools.”

SMOOTH SAILING: With about 25 sailing courses enrolling 600 people a year, the city of Ventura needs lots of boats. Thanks to the Sail Ventura foundation, it has a 17-vessel fleet, ranging from eight-foot training boats to 27-foot sloops. . . . Sail Ventura was formed 10 years ago to promote sailing instruction, said foundation President Rick Hambleton. . . . Tonight, the City Council will honor the group’s latest contributions: four boats worth $10,000, and $5,000 in improvements at the Marina Park dock.

SKIPPING BIRTHDAYS: Three Ventura County cities have October birthdays, but don’t expect a party invitation. “There’s no celebration planned,” said City Hall worker Dianne Harris in Simi Valley, which marks its 24th birthday Sunday. . . . Ditto in Camarillo, whose 29th birthday Oct. 22 will go unobserved. . . . Thousand Oaks turns 29 on Thursday, but it’s skipping festivities in favor of a big 30th anniversary bash next year. How big? A 170-member committee is planning the 2 1/2-month party, which also will celebrate the opening of the Civic Arts Plaza.
