Jim Kelly’s eight-yard touchdown pass to Pete Metzelaars with 2:27 remaining gave the Bills a 17-14 victory over the Giants on Sunday night, handing New York its first loss of the season after three victories.

It capped a 73-yard, 11-play drive that began when Nate Odomes intercepted a pass from Phil Simms, the third interception and fourth turnover by the Giants.

The Bills took a quick 10-0 lead on Steve Christie’s 24-yard field goal and Henry Jones’ 85-yard return of an interception.

But Simms’ two short touchdown passes--five yards to Chris Calloway and two yards to Mark Jackson--gave the Giants a 14-10 lead at the half.

However, New York couldn’t sustain its offense. And Thurman Thomas, who gained 122 yards in 26 carries, kept the Bills (3-1) from being totally shut down by the Giants.

Then it settled into a defensive struggle, punctuated by turnovers that stopped both teams in the third quarter--a fumble by Aaron Pierce at the Buffalo 19 and a fumble by Buffalo’s Kenneth Davis at the Giants’ 24.

Buffalo took a 3-0 lead with six minutes gone on Christie’s 24-yard field goal. It was set up by a 22-yard third-down pass play from Kelly to Don Beebe.

The Giants seemed set to score, but on third and one from the Buffalo 22 a pass by Simms went off the hands of tight end Howard Cross and Jones grabbed it. He sped 85 yards down the left sideline untouched for the touchdown.

The Giants kept the Bills bottled up for most of the second period and it finally paid off. Chris Mohr, punting from his own three, dropped the snap then got off a 30-yard kick.

New York then went 33 yards in seven plays for the touchdown on Simms’ five-yard pass to Chris Calloway. Greg Jackson’s interception set up a 59-yard drive capped by Simms’ touchdown pass to Mark Jackson with 18 seconds left in the half.
