Rick Mirer is giving the Seattle Seahawks something they didn’t have much of last season--points from their offense.

The 23-year-old rookie from Notre Dame shook off a fierce tackle by Junior Seau late in the first half and came back to help Seattle beat San Diego, 31-14, Sunday.

“I think I had a pretty good day but I have to give all the credit to the quarterback,” Brian Blades of the Seahawks said after his 10-catch, 132-yard, one-touchdown performance. “He has such a strong will to win. He was just outstanding. He’s going to be a great one.”

The second player picked in April’s draft had his first 200-yard passing game in the NFL. He completed 25 of 40 passes for 282 yards and one touchdown.

“He reminds me of Steve Young because of the way he scrambles and throws on the run,” Charger cornerback Donald Frank said. “Mirer’s performance made all the difference.”

The Seahawks (3-2) won their third straight game for the first time since the 1991 season and ended a four-game losing streak against the Chargers (2-2).

Mirer had to leave the game for the final 21 seconds of the opening half because of a sprained left ankle.

“Junior flattened out my ankle pretty good,” Mirer said. “It was sore but I was OK to play.”

Mirer stood on the sidelines, though, when backup Dan McGwire completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Blades with 10 seconds left in the second quarter for a 17-7 halftime lead.

Led by Cortez Kennedy, the Seahawks held the Chargers to a single touchdown until backup quarterback John Friesz rallied them for a score with 2:11 left.

Stan Humphries completed 12 of 27 passes for 141 yards and was replaced by Friesz with Seattle ahead 31-7 with 4:48 remaining. Friesz drove San Diego 66 yards in 10 plays for its second touchdown, an 11-yard pass to Anthony Miller.

Miller caught 10 passes for 123 yards.
