The Indianapolis Colts, who boasted the NFL’s longest active road winning streak at four games, were looking to extend the string. But they had to do it at Mile High Stadium, where the Broncos hardly ever lose.

The Colts found out why as John Elway passed for two touchdowns, staking Denver to a 28-0 lead en route to a 35-13 romp Sunday.

“That’s how we should play at home,” Denver safety Dennis Smith said. “We have to be dominating at home to send a message to everybody we play that it’s not going to be easy to come in here and win a game.”

Denver (3-1), which has won 19 of its last 21 home games, scored touchdowns on its first four possessions.

“Any time you score four touchdowns in a row, you’ve got to call that strong,” Broncos Coach Wade Phillips said.

The Colts (2-2) cut the deficit to 28-13, but the Broncos used a trick play late in the third quarter--wide receiver Arthur Marshall connected with fellow receiver Derek Russell on a 30-yard touchdown pass play--to wrap it up.

Elway completed 20 of 30 passes for 230 yards in an almost flawless performance. The Broncos finished with 454 total yards and converted 10 of 14 third-down opportunities.

Robert Delpino and Rod Bernstine also scored touchdowns for the Broncos, who had an effective ground game for the first time this season. Delpino had 83 yards, Bernstine 60 as the Broncos generated 196 yards rushing.

“We have no excuses, the better team beat us today,” Colt Coach Ted Marchibroda said. “Denver played extremely well in the first half. It seemed like they caught everything and made no mistakes.”

Elway took the Broncos 80 yards in 10 plays for their first touchdown. He completed 21-yard passes to Bernstine and Vance Johnson, and Delpino ran the final two yards.

Denver went 66 yards for its next score, with Bernstine slicing nine yards off the right side for the second touchdown.

Moments later, Denver cornerback Tyrone Braxton stepped in front of intended receiver Reggie Langhorne and intercepted Jack Trudeau’s pass, returning it 25 yards to the Indianapolis nine. Three plays later, Elway connected with Glyn Milburn in the right flat for a three-yard touchdown pass play.

The Broncos overcame four penalties for their fourth touchdown, which came on Elway’s 22-yard pass to tight end Shannon Sharpe with 6:42 left in the half.

Trudeau’s 37-yard pass to tight end Kerry Cash got the Indianapolis offense started, and Dean Biasucci kicked a 28-yard field goal with 1:53 remaining in the half.

The Broncos tried to run out the clock, but a fumbled handoff was recovered by the Colts’ Sam Clancy at the Denver 20. Trudeau then passed to Cash for a touchdown with 10 seconds remaining.
