Sizing up the Lakers’ size at the opening of training camp in Honolulu on Friday:

Power forward Elden Campbell, who won’t be asked to carry the team on his shoulders, appeared ready to do just that, thanks to a conditioning program that added significant bulk to his upper body.

“I think it’s obvious Elden worked hard during the off-season to improve himself physically,” Coach Randy Pfund said. “That’s the first step. Work ethic on the court and playing hard every time on the floor is the next step. I think this is a good sign.”

Meanwhile, center-forward Antonio Harvey, trying to make the team as a rookie free agent signee from tiny Pfeiffer, definitely has the Lakers’ interest piqued.

“He’s a real lively, active kid,” said Jerry West, Laker general manager. “The thing that interested us during summer league is that he had flashes where he was absolutely spectacular because of his athletic ability. One of the things a young person needs to make it in this league is physical tools. Whether he has the skill level, that’s what the coaches will try to ascertain.”
