Willard Hanna, 82, a former State Department employee, Southeast Asia expert and author. Hanna served during the 1940s and ‘50s in Manila; Jakarta, Indonesia, and in Tokyo, where he worked as an information officer. He left the State Department in 1954 and spent the rest of his career working for the American Universities Field Staff, a foundation studying foreign cultures. He retired in 1976. His books on Asia include “Destiny Has Eight Eyes,” “Bali Profile,” “The Formation of Malaysia” and “Eight Nation Makers.” In Hanover, N.H., on Tuesday of pneumonia.
