Oklahoma rode the sore legs of its strong-armed quarterback, Cale Gundy, to end a four-year losing streak in the Red River rivalry with Texas.

Gundy, who injured his left hip in practice on Wednesday, ran for three touchdowns as No. 10 Oklahoma defeated Texas, 38-17, Saturday in the Cotton Bowl.

It was Sooner Coach Gary Gibbs’ first victory in five tries in against the Longhorns.

“I’m happy but I’m also relieved to get the monkey off my back,” Gibbs said. “But if we come down here and lose next year the monkey will jump back on.”

Oklahoma (5-0) out-rushed Texas, 275 yards to 88, using a quarterback who has made his reputation with his arm, not his legs.

“We couldn’t run and they did,” said Texas Coach John Mackovic, whose Longhorns (1-3-1) are off to their worst start since 1938. “We just couldn’t contain them. Their offensive line produced gaping holes.”

The Sooners, playing against the NCAA’s 104th-ranked defense, built a 17-3 lead in the third quarter after a ground-oriented 65-yard drive capped by Gundy, who faked a pitch on the option and ran 18 yards for the touchdown.

Texas struck back on a Shea Morenz’s 41-yard pass to Mike Adams but couldn’t contain Gundy, who countered with a 79-yard drive and scored on a sneak to make it 24-10.
