PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Brethren Christian Plays Flat, but Comes Away With Victory

It wasn’t exactly as they would have liked it, but members of the Brethren Christian football team were more than happy to take Saturday’s 20-7 nonleague victory over El Cajon Christian before a crowd of 350 at Granite Hills High in El Cajon.

“We had a major letdown tonight,” said Warrior quarterback Reggie Davis, who connected on five of 12 passes for 109 yards. “It was just one of those things. The Patriots played really good defense. It was a lot more than we expected.”

Expecting to overpower the smaller El Cajon team, the Warriors (4-1) found a tough defense pounding them most of the night, with Davis being pressured frequently and being sacked once.

“(El Cajon) came ready to play,” Warrior Coach Ken Sharrar said. “They woke us up to what we have to focus on.”

Davis got his team on the scoreboard with 1:34 left in the half, darting in from one yard. Jim Ayres’ extra point gave the Warriors a 7-0 halftime lead. The score was set up by a 46-yard screen pass from Davis to tight end Andy Brown.

The Warriors pushed the lead to 13-0 in the third quarter when running back Keith Washington scored from 11 yards. Davis, also playing cornerback, had an interception to set up the touchdown.

“We came out flat in the first half,” said Washington, who had 20 carries for 132 yards and scored on a three-yard run in the game’s final minutes. “That was hard to understand, because we had great practices, and we were ready.”
