NORTHRIDGE : Cal State Celebrates ‘Coming Out’ Day

Share

Instead of celebrating National Coming Out Day for just one day as in years past, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Alliance at Cal State Northridge is hosting a week of events to educate students about homosexuality.

The organization began the event Monday with a rally outside the university student union. Rain delayed the start of the program, organizers said, but several speakers and a gay stand-up comedian braved the weather to address a small audience.

Organizers hope that today’s third-annual “Kiss-In,” from noon to 1:30 p.m., will draw a crowd to the Sierra Breezeway on campus as lesbian, gay and bisexual students kiss and hug their partners in a public display of affection.

At 6:30 tonight in the Santa Clarita Room of the student union, the LGBA will show the lesbian-themed feature film “Desert Hearts.”

The annual LGBA student art forum, featuring performance art, poetry readings, films, painting, sculpture and drawings by gay, lesbian and bisexual students, will open to the public at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Sight and Sound Gallery of the student union.

Thursday at noon in the North Valley Room of the student union the campus Jewish community center will co-host a conversational game called “Can We Talk? Can We Get Along?”

The final event of the week will feature two films on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the North Valley Room of the student union--”The March on Washington” a documentary produced by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and “The Gay Agenda,” an anti-gay film put out by the Antelope Valley Springs of Life church in Lancaster.
