COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Miller Has Been Too Much for One

There’s a good chance that a look at the UCLA-Brigham Young film will cause Washington coaches to throw out any idea of trying to block Jamir Miller with one man. BYU tried it, and he had 4 1/2 of UCLA’s 10 sacks of Cougar quarterback John Walsh in a 68-14 victory.

Trying to keep Miller at bay with one man has become the exception, rather than the rule. “Teams are keeping a back in the backfield, pulling a guard, whatever, to try to keep me out with two people,” said Miller, who has 8 1/2 sacks in four games this season.

Skip Hicks has returned to full practice and might be ready to play against Washington on Saturday at the Rose Bowl, though Coach Terry Donahue is being cautious about using him, fearing a recurrence of his ankle injury, suffered against Nebraska. . . . Daron Washington re-injured his ankle against BYU and will be out Saturday. If Hicks can’t play, that leaves senior Rickey Davis at tailback, with freshman Derek Ayers in reserve. It also leaves James Milliner, usually a fullback, as the tailback in what is expected to be an increased number of one-back formations. . . . Left tackle Jonathan Ogden, who strained a knee ligament against Stanford, is running again and might be available to play against Washington.
