The Glendale girls’ tennis team entered the week as the unlikely leader of the Pacific League.

The Dynamiters’ victory over Pasadena Friday gave them an 8-1 record, 4-0 in league.

Glendale has been led by singles players Stephanie Loo, Sharon Kim and Tracy Staton. Doubles have also been formidable with April Fong and Susie Lu, Nina Magallanes and Lala Aratoon, and Jamie Bornhoeft and Tiffany Fabian.

At last week’s Kenny Staub Invitational cross-county meet in La Crescenta, Joel Herrera of Hoover placed second in the Southern Section Division III race. Michelle Zayas of Crescenta Valley placed second and Kevin Koeper of St. Francis finished fifth in Division I, and Sharon Mars of La Canada was third in Division II.

The Marshall High girls’ volleyball team, traditionally one of the strongest in the City Section’s 3-A Division, is off to another fast start.

The Barristers improved to 5-1 last week with a sweep of Verdugo Hills. Outside hitter Cindy Wong led Marshall with seven kills.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College football team travels to L.A. Southwest on Saturday for a Western State Conference game.

Glendale (1-3, 0-3 in the WSC) is coming off a 57-18 WSC loss against Bakersfield.

Bakersfield, which entered the game ranked fifth in the state, rolled up more than 500 yards against the Vaqueros.

Pathon Rucker gained 178 yards in 25 carries for Glendale.

The Glendale men’s and women’s cross-country teams will participate in the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational on Friday.

The Vaquero women finished third and the men finished fourth at the Irvine Invitational last week.

Auria Roberto was the top Glendale women’s finisher in fourth place. Nacho Delgado of Glendale finished 15th in the men’s event.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College football team travels to Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Occidental (3-1, 1-1) defeated Whittier, 37-16, in a SCIAC game Saturday. Pomona-Pitzer (1-3, 0-2) had a bye last week.

Tiger quarterback Davin Lundquist completed nine of 14 passes for 120 yards and rushed for 85, including three touchdowns. He has passed for 706 yards, rushed for 260 and scored six touchdowns.

The Occidental women’s volleyball team entered the week 10-8, 1-4 in the SCIAC after losses to Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont and a victory over Whittier last week.

Occidental plays at La Verne on Friday.

The Occidental cross-country team will compete this weekend in the SCIAC’s eight-way dual meet at La Mirada Park.

Occidental is led by senior Becky Kopchick, who was the top Division III women’s finisher at the Stanford Invitational two weeks ago. The Occidental women are ranked 10th in Division III.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Tim Rosales, La Canada--Rosales gained 110 yards in 14 carries to lead the Spartans to their second consecutive victory, a 41-12 win over Hoover.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Davin Lundquist, Occidental-- Lundquist, the Tigers’ quarterback, passed for 120 yards and rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns to lead Occidental to a 37-16 SCIAC victory over Whittier.

MISCELLANY

The second annual Bowl-to-Bowl Walk and Health and Fitness Fair will be staged Oct. 23 in Pasadena. The event includes a 3- and 5-K race-walk and a 5-K fitness walk around the Rose Bowl, as well as a 1.5-K recreational walk from the Rose Bowl to Memorial Park. All ages can participate.
