Daryl Upshaw’s diving interception with 1 minute 17 seconds remaining at the Antelope Valley College 41-yard line stopped a potential game-winning drive and preserved the Marauders’ 19-13 Foothill Conference victory over host Rio Hondo on Saturday.

Defense buoyed the Marauders (3-2, 2-0 in conference play) on the rain-soaked field. Defensive backs Richard Lear and Marian Bacon also intercepted passes, and linebacker Rafael Gutierrez recovered a fumble and blocked an extra-point attempt.

Darnell Rubin kept Rio Hondo in the game with 126 yards on six receptions and 168 yards on five punt and kickoff returns.

Running back Leonard Redwine twice gave the Marauders the lead with touchdown runs, but the Roadrunners (3-2, 1-1) came back to tie in the first and third quarters.

But with 8:53 remaining in the third, Roosevelt Miller caught an eight-yard pass for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown, four plays after he returned a kickoff 47 yards.
