After nine days and two games in Honolulu, the Lakers concluded the Hawaii portion of training camp by needing a list to remember the number of disappointing showings among veterans but only a short memory to count the most pleasant discovery.

Antonio Harvey.

The undrafted rookie from Pfeiffer College, an NAIA school, went from intriguing possibility in summer league to real prospect in the early days of camp to real-life Laker by the time the team returned home on Sunday. Well, more than likely.

“It’s probably a little early for that,” Coach Randy Pfund said. “But you’ve got to give the guy a huge asterisk right now.”

Especially after the two games against the Utah Jazz at Blaisdell Arena: four blocked shots and six rebounds in 18 minutes Friday in the Lakers’ 98-86 loss and four blocks and six rebounds in 25 minutes Saturday in the 81-77 loss. That was in contrast to the play of veterans Vlade Divac, Elden Campbell and Anthony Peeler, all of whom drew critical comments from Pfund.

“I definitely feel pretty good about my performances,” said Harvey, a 6-foot-11, 225-pounder who uses leaping ability and quickness to compensate for an unpolished game. “But nothing is guaranteed. I’m just going to continue to go out and do what the Lakers expect.”

They next play Wednesday, against the Clippers at Las Vegas. The first cuts are expected after the four-team exhibition on Friday and Saturday at the Forum.
