Not-Guilty Plea Used in Racist Note Case
A Glendale man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge that he stamped racist messages at a supermarket in Covina, court officials said.
Allan E. Carlson is accused of stamping the message “Earth’s most endangered species: the white race, help preserve it” on about 30 notebooks, Covina Police Lt. Kim Raney said.
Carlson, 29, entered the plea at his arraignment in Citrus Municipal Court in West Covina. Judge Michael Rutberg set a Nov. 3 pretrial conference, Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Burns said.
Carlson is charged with one misdemeanor count of malicious mischief stemming from his arrest at a Lucky Food Center, prosecutors said. He is free on his own recognizance. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to six months in jail or be fined or both.
Similar messages had been found earlier in August in notebooks at two other stores in Covina--Thrifty Drug Store and Target--and at K mart stores in Burbank and Sunland. Carlson has not been charged in those crimes.
