World IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : Kasparov Retains World Chess Crown

Chess champion Garry Kasparov confirmed his reputation as the world’s best player and won a $1.5-million prize with a 12 1/2 to 7 1/2 match victory over British challenger Nigel Short. Kasparov amassed a winning record of six wins, one loss and 13 draws in the title contest. In the 20th game, he quickly accepted Short’s offer of a draw after 36 moves. The match in London was sponsored by the Times of London newspaper.
