Wisconsin Weaned From Milk Title

To all those with Wisconsin license plates that say “America’s Dairyland,” it might seem a little unsettling to see California take over as the top milk state.

California took the lead in September by producing 218.8 million gallons of raw milk for the month, about 10 million more than Wisconsin.

Wisconsin had been No. 1 since 1915, and the lost title caused rumblings in the state capital. But Gov. Tommy G. Thompson quickly rattled off a list of products ranging from cheese to unsweetened condensed milk in which Wisconsin still leads.

“We have the World Dairy Expo and we just broke ground for the World Dairy Center,” he said. “So Wisconsin still is and will be America’s Dairyland.”
