Westminster Beats Santa Ana for First Victory

Quan Nguyen rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns as Westminster got its first victory of the season by beating Santa Ana, 43-29, Friday at Westminster High School.

Westminster (1-6, 1-3 in league) took a 22-15 lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Craig Decker with 3:30 left in the half.

Santa Ana (1-6, 1-3) came back within a point on a 47-yard run by quarterback Mark Fausto with 1:20 left but the extra-point attempt failed. Westminster came right back though.

The Lions took a 29-21 lead on a three-yard run by Mark Mulligan with 36 seconds left in the half. Westminster went 57 yards in three plays. Quarterback Jerry Allison completed passes of 29 and 25 yards before Mulligan’s touchdown run.

Nguyen put Westminster ahead, 36-21, when he went 49-yard run up the middle, breaking two tackles along the way, on the last play of the third quarter.

Fausto had a part in all four of Santa Ana’s touchdowns. Besides the 47-yard touchdown run, he had scoring passes of one, two and 15 yards to Carlos Rodriguez.

Fausto was 20 of 37 for 167 yards and rushed for 118 yards in 12 carries.
