Voters to Decide Fate of Proposed Card Casino

Share

Voters on Tuesday will decide the fate of a card club proposed by a local pastor as part of his ambitious plan to build a convention center, sports arena and shopping center.

If approved by voters, a casino would hand over 16% of its gross revenues to the city.

The Rev. Charles L. Floyd of the Second Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist church said the project would create 2,000 jobs in the city.

Opponents of the measure, Proposition K, said Floyd has no financial support for the casino or other projects, and has no experience operating a casino.

Floyd said he is waiting for Election Day results before starting negotiations with potential developers. The measure does not designate a specific site for the project, but Floyd said he is interested in a 65-acre parcel to the west of the Long Beach (710) Freeway. The lot--which contains scattered industrial and residential development--is within the city’s redevelopment boundaries, officials said.
