High school football players from the region lead all four state statistical categories tabulated this week by Cal-Hi Sports magazine.
Wilbert Smith of Montclair Prep leads rushers with 1,895 yards, followed in second place by George Keiaho (1,722) of Buena.
In passing, Newbury Park’s Keith Smith tops the list with 2,164 yards and his primary target, Leodes Van Buren, leads receivers with 64 receptions. Among the top 11 reported state passing leaders, five are from the Valley and Ventura County region.
Smith and Keiaho also rank first and second in scoring with 194 and 156 points.
Basketball
A free basketball coaching clinic will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the College of the Canyons. Sponsored by the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Assn., the event will include a continental breakfast.
Speakers include L.A. Baptist Coach Maury Neville, Hart Coach Mike May, Ventura Coach Dan Larson, state rules interpreter Bill White and College of the Canyons women’s Coach Greg Herrick.
