Trinity Lures Homesick Player From Master’s

Basketball player Marc Davidson, a 6-foot-6 transfer from Illinois, has left The Master’s College and enrolled at Trinity College in Deerfield, Ill.

“He just got homesick,” The Master’s Coach Bill Oates said.

Davidson played sparingly for Illinois last season, averaging 1.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in about 10 minutes a game.

Football

Cal State Northridge quarterback J.J. O’Laughlin was selected offensive player of the week in the American West Conference for his five-touchdown passing performance last Saturday in a 48-38 loss to UC Davis. O’Laughlin tied a Northridge record for scoring passes in a game. In the past three games, he has passed for 212, 262 and 337 yards--all career highs.

Golf

Darren Angel, a junior at Granada Hills High and the defending City Section individual golf champion, has been named a second-team All-American by the Georgia-based American Junior Golf Assn. Angel, 16, who lives in Northridge, was one of five Southern Californians named to the boys’ team.

Tiger Woods of Cypress, Ted Oh of Torrance and Eddy Lee of Corona were first-team selections. Mike Walton of Palm Desert was a third-team choice.

The selections were based on performances in AJGA junior events throughout the year. The players will be honored at a banquet Nov. 24 at the Rolex Junior Classic in Tucson.

Ron Rhodes has been named the head professional at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, the club announced.

Rhodes, a former USC All-American and PGA Tour pro, previously worked at Westlake Village Golf Club, Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks and Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

Rhodes played at USC in 1960-63 and was co-captain as a senior with PGA Senior Tour standout Dave Stockton.

Jeramy Adams, a senior at Camarillo High, will be among 200 junior golfers in the West Division of the Junior Ping Tour, beginning today and running through February.

Adams will compete today through Sunday at Marriott’s Marco Island Resort in Marco Island, Fla. The second event is scheduled for Nov. 12-14 at the Arizona Golf Resort in Mesa. Future events have yet to be scheduled.

Kickboxing

Benny (the Jet) Urquidez of Los Angeles, a five-time World Kickboxing Assn. champion and owner of the Jet Center martial-arts school in Van Nuys, will fight Japanese champion Yoshihisa Tagami on Dec. 4 in Las Vegas for the WKA world light middleweight title.

The match will mark the final bout in the career of Urquidez, who is 57-0 with 49 knockouts. Four other kickboxing events are scheduled on the undercard.
