AGOURA HILLS : Wheelchair Ramp Work to Continue
Construction work on sidewalks across Agoura Hills will continue through next year thanks to a City Council decision to spend its share of state bicycle- and walking-path funds on making the city wheelchair-accessible.
The 1990 federal Americans with Disabilities Act says cities should add wheelchair ramps to all sidewalks by 1995, said Agoura Hills City Engineer Elroy Kiepke. Many older cities, built with perpendicular curbs, will have considerable difficulty meeting that deadline, he said.
But Agoura Hills, a newer city with more ramps to start with, and one which has pursued an aggressive program to install them, is well on its way to being one of few cities where no place is off limits to wheelchairs, he said.
