SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Larry Vasquez rushed nine times for 106 yards and a touchdown to lead Troy to a 13-3 victory over Buena Park in a Freeway League game Friday night at Fullerton High.

Vasquez scored on a 56-yard run in the second quarter that gave the Warriors (4-3-1, 2-1) a 6-3 lead. Brian Logan’s 37-yard touchdown pass to Nick Ruzzi early in the fourth quarter put the game away.

Ruzzi also intercepted two passes, giving him four in his last four games.

Both teams squandered several opportunities, mostly because of penalties. Buena Park was flagged 14 times for 100 yards, Troy 10 times for 105.

The penalties cost the Coyotes (1-7, 1-2) two first-half touchdowns, and a touchdown run by Troy’s Logan was called back in the third quarter.

Buena Park piled up 172 yards of offense in the first half, mainly because of quarterback George McDonald, who rushed for 112 yards in 14 carries in the half and finished with 163 in 21.

Still, all the scoring the Coyotes could muster was a 43-yard field goal by Jude Reyes.

Troy basically shut down the Buena Park rushing attack in the second half and got its own ground game going behind Vasquez, Chris Blume (61 yards on eight carries in the half) and Logan, who scrambled for 42 yards on six second-half carries.
