Capistrano Valley Gets Shutout of Dana Hills

Capistrano Valley’s defense dominated Dana Hills Friday night, as the No. 9 Cougars held the Dolphins to 21 yards of offense in a 34-0 South Coast League victory at Dana Hills High.

Led by Jeff Culver and Andrew Klein, the Cougar defense recorded 11 sacks and held the Dolphins (1-7, 0-3) to minus nine yards rushing. Dolphin quarterback Scott Covington, who threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns last week, completed seven of 14 passes for only 40 yards.

Capistrano Valley (5-3, 2-1) came out on its first drive led by Danny Geiss, who ran 14 times for 53 yards, took the ball 80 yards in 10 plays and scored on Dan Lauder’s one-yard run with 3:11 left in the first.

In the second quarter, Bron Witten made the score 14-0 when he blocked Ryan Hollander’s punt and fell on the ball in the end zone with 5:29 left in the half.

Quarterback Sam Gaines, who completed eight of 13 passes for 176 yards with one interception, opened the second half with a screen pass to Gabe Payne, who took the ball 60 yards for the touchdown with 9:40 left in the third.

Lauder scored his second touchdown on a one-yard run, making the score 28-0 with 2:58 remaining in the third.

Gaines added the final score when he ran in from 13 yards out with 7:40 remaining in the game.
