Woodbridge Comes Back to Beat University, 21-10

Woodbridge rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to defeat University, 21-10, in a Sea View League game Friday night at Irvine High School.

Woodbridge (6-2, 3-2 in league) was led by running back Billy Atkinson, who rushed for 102 yards in 20 carries and one touchdown.

University (1-7, 1-4) was led by Ricco Roberson, who rotated between the halfback and quarterback position. Roberson rushed for 112 yards in 22 carries and completed three of four passes for 74 yards.

Woodbridge trailed, 10-7 at halftime. But Rich Rommelfanger scored a 26-yard touchdown run with seven minutes left in the third quarter to give the Warriors a 14-10 lead.

Woodbridge cashed in a University turnover in the fourth quarter for their next score. University’s Dov Herbstman muffed a punt at the University 10, and Justin Dufour recovered for Woodbridge.

Two plays later, Atkinson scored from two yards out to give Woodbridge a 21-10 lead.

University had taken a 10-7 lead when Herbstman, who rotated at quarterback with Roberson, connected with Jamie Polidor on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:25 left in the first half.

Woodbridge scored the first touchdown on quarterback Matt Sauk’s one-yard keeper with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter.

University closed the gap to 7-3 on a 27-yard field goal by Brett Lockwood.
