OCCUPATION: CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT

Share

Name: Mina Mallory

Company: Alaska Airlines

Thumbs up: “It’s a fun job with lots of flexibility. Plus, you get to meet people from all over. Working for an airline has given me the opportunity to travel more than I ever could in another type of job. I was really happy when I got assigned to Orange County because the manager here makes this a great place to work.”

Thumbs down: “Working holidays and weekends. But eventually, when you have enough seniority, you don’t have to work as many of those shifts.”

Next step: “I would like to get more involved in sales or public relations for Alaska Airlines.”

Advice: “Knowing a second language is a big plus. I am Iranian and can speak Farsi to Iranian passengers who are having difficulty communicating in English. Being bilingual is not a requirement, but it helps you do your job better sometimes.”

Salary range: $8.50 to $14 an hour.

Hours: Most airline customer service agents are employed part time. Morning shifts begin very early, sometimes before 6 a.m. Evening, holiday and weekend work is also required.

Educational and training requirements: Most airlines require at least a high school diploma. A college background and the ability to speak more than one language is helpful in obtaining employment. Some community colleges offer special training for airline careers. Seminars and on-the-job training for employees are also provided by the airlines.

Expected demand: Slight. The slow economy is forcing airlines to minimize new hires.

Job description: Airline customer service agents sell tickets, check baggage, assign seats and make sure departing planes have enough meals on board. They relay messages to passengers or those awaiting their arrival and assist those whose planes have been delayed in finding other transportation or lodgings. At larger airports with international flights, they direct passengers through the customs area and offer assistance in completing declaration forms.

Major employing industries: Domestic and international airlines.
