WOODLAND HILLS : Pierce Garners 37 Journalism Awards

Share

Pierce College journalism students took first place in a competition among two dozen community colleges in Southern California, raking in 37 awards for writing, editing, photography and layout.

Pierce students also were awarded eight first place prizes for their weekly newspaper, The Roundup, and their twice-yearly magazine, The Bull, at a ceremony Saturday at Long Beach City College, said Mike Cornner, a journalism adviser at Pierce.

About 25 community colleges and nearly 500 students submitted entries for awards in 30 categories, Cornner said. Saddleback College in Mission Viejo placed second, he said, with 32 awards, including eight first-place prizes.

Cornner said Pierce has been the “dominant force” in such competitions involving Southern California community colleges for about two decades, largely because of its tough grading policy. Any student who makes a factual error in a story receives an “F” grade for that assignment, he said.

“This year was a good harvest of awards,” Cornner said. “We have set a rigorous rating schedule, and the students have risen to our high standards.”

The annual competition was sponsored by the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges.
