Florida State might have been looking ahead to next week’s showdown against Notre Dame, but that is no excuse as far as Coach Bobby Bowden is concerned.

“If Maryland can get 20 points on us--which they did, and they earned it all--then Notre Dame will get 40,” Bowden said Saturday after the top-ranked Seminoles defeated the Terrapins, 49-20.

The 20 points was the most scored against the Seminoles this season. The Terrapins ran for 140 yards, passed for 313 and might have scored more had they not failed on two fourth-down plays inside the Florida State 10.

The Seminoles, who are 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, led only 28-20 in the third quarter. But reserve quarterback Danny Kanell’s fifth touchdown pass of the game, a 33-yarder to Kevin Knox, started a string of 21 points that ended the Terrapins’ upset bid and secured the ACC title for the Seminoles.

Kanell, subbing for injured Charlie Ward, completed 28 of 38 passes for 341 yards against Maryland (1-8, 1-5). Ward injured his ribs last week, but he is expected to start against Notre Dame.

“Next week Charlie Ward will go, unless a train runs over him. Even then I will start him,” Bowden said with a grin.
