Warren Moon gave himself some job security on Sunday.

After being assured by Coach Jack Pardee that he would be the starter as long as he remained successful, Moon had the 37th 300-yard passing day of his career in leading the Houston Oilers over the Seattle Seahawks, 24-14.

Moon completed two touchdown passes as Houston (4-4) won its third straight game.

“I was down when I was benched, I didn’t agree with it, I never thought I was that bad a player,” Moon said. “But now I’ve put it behind me and I’m just playing the way I’ve always played.”

Rookie quarterback Rick Mirer threw one touchdown pass for Seattle (4-5). He left the game with two minutes remaining because of an injured left foot, which is not expected to sideline him next week.

Moon completed his first eight passes of the day, including a three-yard touchdown pass to Webster Slaughter.

The Oilers took a 22-7 halftime lead, aided by three field goals by Al Del Greco.

Del Greco also missed his first extra point since 1989, ending his team record streak of 76 in a row.

Moon, third on the NFL’s all-time 300-yard list behind Dan Fouts and Dan Marino, completed 36 of 55 passes for 369 yards. He also threw two interceptions, both into the Seattle end zone.

“Warren did a great job,” Pardee said. “He had a couple of balls he’d like back. Warren took some good hits. He wasn’t sacked that much but they were there. Protection got better as the game went on.”

Moon, looking more efficient than at any time this season, took the Oilers on an 79-yard drive to start the game, completing all seven of his passes. On the touchdown, Slaughter zipped in front of cornerback Dwayne Harper.

Slaughter, slowed by injuries part of this season, had his biggest day for the Oilers. He had seven catches for 110 yards at the half and finished with 135 yards on nine catches.

“When teams play man coverage against us, they can’t beat us,” Slaughter said. “I think we’re getting better. Those wins in a row got us higher and higher.”

Mirer completed a 53-yard touchdown pass play to Kelvin Martin in the first quarter, but the Oilers defense then kept the Seahawks under control until late in the second quarter.

Mirer completed three straight passes and scrambled 13 yards to the Oilers 30, but his next pass was intercepted by cornerback Cris Dishman and returned 20 yards.

After being tackled for a safety in the third quarter by Lamar Lathon, Mirer completed three consecutive passes to set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Chris Warren with 12:57 remaining in the game.
