For now, James Miller, the para-glider who interrupted Saturday’s heavyweight title fight between Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield, has been charged with only a misdemeanor, but he might face felony charges in the near future.

Ron Pearce of the Las Vegas police said that any further chargers would have to be pursued by District Attorney Rex Bell.

Miller was booked early Sunday morning after being released from a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. After posting $200 bail, he was released.

Bowe’s manager, Rock Newman, said his first reaction was that it might be a terrorist attack on Rev. Louis Farrakhan, who was seated in Bowe’s section. Newman was involved in the melee that included Miller being pulled from the ropes and into the crowd.

“I think he should be charged with attempted murder,” Newman said.

Said co-promoter Dan Duva: “I hate the fact that that bum is taking anything away from these two great fighters.”

Miller, 30, apparently is associated with a Las Vegas group called the British School of Para-Gliding. Someone who answered the phone there had no comment Sunday.

A para-glider is a short parachute that is powered by a large fan attached to the flyer’s back. It apparently can be launched by simply running on the ground.

Although there was no confirmation that it was the same man, the answering machine message of a James Miller of Henderson, Nev., said:

“Hey guys, you think it’s really safe? I mean, I’ve never jumped off a bridge with a bungee cord attached to me while holding my recorder phone. . . . It’s really stupid and silly. What? Who called me chicken? I’m not chicken, All right, I’ll do it. If I don’t live through this, I’ll call you right back. . . . Now, where was I? One, two, three . . . “

After that, there is only a yell.
