Considered the best in town, this restaurant offers what many consider the ultimate in Southwestern cuisine, along with impeccable service and an exceptional wine list.

TOP OF THE ROCK:

The Buttes Resort, 2000 Westcourt Way, Tempe; (602) 225-9000 Mountaintop restaurant offers outstanding city views and Southwestern-influenced menu. Service and brunch receive high marks, but some find it pricey.

SAM’S CAFE

455 N. 3rd St., Phoenix; (602) 252-3545 This Southwestern-theme restaurant wins over customers with its exciting atmosphere and outdoor patio. But some complain it’s too noisy and yuppie-oriented.

DON JOSE

3734 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix (602) 955-7870 Family-owned, mid-city restaurant lacks ambience, but regulars enjoy good, cheap and spicy Mexican food.

FAJITAS

9841 N. Black Canyon Highway, Phoenix; (602) 870-4030 Westside, Tex-Mex house serves what most consider the best fajitas and margaritas in town. No reservations necessary, but some complain of long waits and smoky environment.

RESTAURANT MEXICO

16 E. 7th St., Tempe; (602) 967-3280 What this restaurant lacks in atmosphere it more than makes up for in fresh, homemade food from central Mexico that’s bargain-priced.
