More Whales Grounded as Others Are Saved

NELSON, New Zealand —
Volunteers saved 45 pilot whales from drowning Tuesday after they grounded themselves on a New Zealand beach, only to find another 110 had come aground at a nearby beach.
Scientists were baffled as to why hundreds of the small whales had beached themselves on the same day in the same place at the northernmost tip of New Zealand’s South Island.
