Notes on a Scorecard - Nov. 10, 1993

Share

What a year this has been for prominent NFL quarterbacks--mostly forgettable. . . . Dan Marino, who began 1993 with the most yards passing of any active quarterback, is injured and sidelined for the rest of the season. . . .

Joe Montana, No. 2 on the list, is hurt. . . .

No. 3 Steve DeBerg was released. . . .

No. 6 Warren Moon was benched. . . .

No. 7 Dave Krieg was a backup. . . .

No. 8 Boomer Esiason was traded, a plus for him. . . .

No. 9 Ken O’Brien was a backup. . . .

No. 11 Jim Everett was benched. . . .

No. 12 Bernie Kosar was released. . . .

This is to say nothing of Randall Cunningham, who is sidelined for at least the regular season because of an injury. . . .

So far, so good, for No. 4 Phil Simms, No. 5 John Elway and No. 10 Jim Kelly. . . .

William Perry was cut Tuesday. Never have the Chicago Bears trimmed so much fat. . . .

The baby-faced Green Bay Packer wearing the baseball cap and standing near Coach Mike Holmgren on the sideline Monday night in Kansas City was former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer. . . .

The Colts’ uniforms--uncluttered, blue and white, and with the horseshoe on the helmet--have remained the same since the Johnny Unitas days in Baltimore, but still are among the most attractive in the NFL. . . .

Thumbs up to Dallas owner Jerry Jones for planning to remove the artificial turf in Texas Stadium and replace it with grass next season. . . .

UCLA and USC are packed with legitimate first-team All-Pacific 10 Conference candidates. . . .

The Bruins: Wide receiver J.J. Stokes, offensive linemen Vaughn Parker and Craig Novitsky, linebacker Jamir Miller, safety Marvin Goodwin and kicker Bjorn Merten. . . .

The Trojans: Quarterback Rob Johnson, wide receiver Johnnie Morton, defensive end Willie McGinest and cornerback Jason Sehorn. . . .

The NBA season began a month after the NHL’s, but the first Laker-Clipper game will be played Tuesday at the Forum and the first King-Mighty Duck game not until Dec. 2 at the Forum. . . .

San Antonio, which needed a point guard to replace Avery Johnson, made a good pickup in Negele Knight from Phoenix. . . .

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Brocco might not be the only Kentucky Derby candidate in trainer Randy Winick’s barn. . . .

Another 2-year-old owned by Cubby Broccoli is Duca, who finished a fast-closing third in a sprint in his debut and will run a mile at Santa Anita on Sunday. . . .

“If Duca wins, we’ll probably run him in the Hollywood Futurity,” Winick said. “Gary Stevens is nearly as excited about him as he is about Brocco. The chances of Brocco running in the Futurity are only about one in four because we’d like to have a fresh horse for the 3-year-old races early next year at Santa Anita.” . . .

Bobby Frankel’s horses earned $1.1 million on Breeders’ Cup day, not bad considering that none of them won a race. . . .

The $400,000 Yellow Ribbon Stakes Sunday at Santa Anita has attracted fillies and mares that have won stakes races in Italy, Germany, France, England, Canada, Australia, and even the United States. . . .

Ben Johnson, who nearly signed with an Italian soccer team, might try the Canadian Football League next season. . . .

Carroll Shelby, Cal Worthington and Evel Knievel will be the first inductees into the Long Beach Auto Show Hall of Fame Nov. 24 at the Long Beach Convention Center. . . .

Noureddine Morceli, the Algerian who set a mile record of 3:44.39, will visit his old Riverside City College coach, Ted Banks, next week. . . .

The New York Rangers last won a Stanley Cup in 1940. Now author Frank Brown is out with a book on the Rangers called “Broadway Blues.” The price is $19.40. . . .

The Philadelphia Phillies’ closer next season could be rookie Ricky Bottalico. . . .

To the surprise of few, the only team that didn’t send a front-office representative to the World Series was Marge Schott’s Cincinnati Reds. . . .

Will Colorado, which didn’t re-sign first baseman Andres Galarraga, go after Will Clark? . . .
