PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Landeta on His Way to Anaheim?

Share

Reports from New York indicated that punter Sean Landeta, who was released by the Giants this week, was on his way to Anaheim to meet and possibly sign with the Rams today.

Landeta, 31, who underwent reconstructive knee surgery last November, had slipped from his career mark of 43.3 yards per punt to 42.1 yards this season. He reportedly tried out Thursday for the Miami Dolphins but left without a contract.

Paul McJulien, who replaced Don Bracken this year as the Rams’ punter, ranks last in the NFL with a 37.9-yard average.

Running back Jerome Bettis, who has been bothered by flu, practiced on a limited basis.

“I would expect him to start,” Knox said.

Running back David Lang is expected to play for the first time this year after being sidelined in training camp because of a knee injury.

In what sources say can be construed as an exploratory step toward the Rams’ possible move to Baltimore, Ram President John Shaw telephoned Larry Lucchino, a leading sports figure in that city, and was given a reference for an undisclosed business firm.

“We asked him to refer some people we can deal with,” Shaw said. “It wasn’t anything bigger than that.”

Neither Lucchino nor Shaw would confirm the nature of the business.
