SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Manny Millan rushed for 240 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Garden Grove to a 34-9 victory over Bolsa Grande Friday at Garden Grove.

Millan, a junior, carried the ball 23 times and scoring on runs of 14, 9 and 86 yards. Garden Grove (3-7, 3-4) kept the ball on the ground throughout the game, attempting only nine passes.

“This was a nice way to end the season,” Garden Grove Coach Jeff Buenafe said. “Manny’s certainly capable of big games like this but he’s been slowed with injuries. His performance is better late than never.”

The Argonauts controlled Bolsa Grande’s passing attack and quarterback Brian Baughman the entire game. The Matadors (3-7, 2-5) have relied heavily on Baughman’s arm throughout the season.

Friday night, Bolsa Grande attempted only nine running plays and although Baughman completed 17 of 35 passes for 229 yards, he was intercepted twice and did not get Bolsa Grande into the end zone until late in the fourth quarter, a nine-yard scoring pass to Kevin Michini. In addition, Garden Grove defenders sacked him seven times.

Garden Grove’s Jeff Van Horn returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Gerardo Lopez scored the Argonauts’ other touchdown, a 12-yard pass from Troy Haller. It was one of only two pass completions by Garden Grove in the game.

Baughman kicked a 30-yard field goal for Bolsa Grande’s other score.
