Mountain Residents Are Not Awash in Terror
* “High Anxiety in the Hills,” read the headline on Page 1 of The Times two days after the fires.
The feature article went on, through selected quotes of a few fearful people and the psychobabble of an expert or two, to characterize the mountains as awash in paranoia and terror.
I’ve lived in the Santa Monica Mountains for 30 years, and believe me, most people don’t fit that mold. They are not held hostage to fear and feelings of hopelessness. They don’t have a victim’s bone in their bodies, not even the ones who lost their homes.
They are not defeated by the demands of the day nor the stress of the times. They are up to it. That’s how I see my friends and neighbors here in the mountains.
