Highlights

El Modena walked off with the league title, its third consecutive and fourth in five seasons. Aaron Aguilera, the Vanguards’ center, was named the league’s most valuable player. He led a balanced team in scoring, averaging 13 points, and led the league in rebounding, averaging 10. . . . The Vanguards reached the second round of the Division II-A playoffs before losing to San Bernardino. Santa Ana Valley lost in the first round to Long Beach Millikan in the I-AA playoffs. Orange lost in the first round to Esperanza in the I-A playoffs. Canyon, which received an at-large berth, lost in the first round to Riverside North in the II-AA playoffs. . . . The league season ended with a showdown, make that slowdown , for second place between Santa Ana Valley and Orange. Santa Ana Valley, not wanting to play against the zone, held the ball much of the game. Still, with five seconds left, Orange took a 17-15 lead. Then Anthony Porter dribbled base line and sank a three-point field goal at the buzzer to give the Falcons the victory. Porter ran off the court yelling, “I won it! I won it! I won it!” Said Orange Coach Richard Bossenmeyer: “It was the only time all night we played man-to-man.” The loss dropped Orange into a third-place tie with Foothill. The Panthers picked themselves up the next day to beat the Knights in a league playoff game to get to postseason action.
