VENTURA : City Seeks Lower Fee for Dumping Trash

Share

The Ventura City Council on Monday recommended pushing for lower fees to dump trash at the Bailard Landfill in Oxnard.

Councilman Gary Tuttle asked his fellow council members to back him on his bid to secure a $33.50-per-ton fee at Bailard.

The present fee of $44.50 per ton is expected to drop because officials anticipate that the landfill will remain open after its Dec. 7 closure deadline. The price will drop because costs to close and clean up the landfill no longer will be collected as part of the fee, Tuttle said.

The Ventura Regional Sanitation District board, which is made up of representatives from the county’s cities, is expected to decide on reducing the fee this week, said Tuttle, who is Ventura’s representative to the board.

Tuttle is pushing for a $33.50-per-ton fee, but said the new fee could be as high as $37 per ton depending on whether other cities want to pay for education and community programs related to garbage issues.

Tuttle said he expects trash bills to decrease as a result of the lower fee, but does not know how much they will go down.
