LOS ANGELES AIRPORT : Airport Panel to Meet on Banning Airlines Over Fees
- Share via
The Los Angeles Airport Commission will meet this morning to decide whether to follow through on its threat to ban from Los Angeles International Airport airlines that have refused to pay higher landing fees.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor on Monday cleared the way for the commission to act when she rejected an emergency appeal from airlines seeking to maintain their access to the airport.
Although the Airport Commission previously sent letters to several carriers threatening to revoke takeoff and landing privileges, sources said it is unlikely that the city will try to shut out airlines during the busy Thanksgiving holiday.
Airport officials tripled landing fees last summer and have won a series of court battles against airlines that challenged the charges as being excessive. The air carriers are expected to appeal to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Federico Pena.
