The Region : Computer Gifts to 3 Colleges
Three area colleges will benefit from a $2.4-million donation of computer workstations and software by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Transportation Foundation.
Cal Poly Pomona will receive the largest donation, $750,000 worth of computer technology. Its College of Engineering will receive 25 computer workstations and software for architectural design, geographic information, urban design and technical drafting.
Cal State Los Angeles will receive 20 workstations and software for a federal defense conversion program in manufacturing engineering, and Pasadena City College will receive five workstations.
In all, 80 Intergraph Corp. workstations and software were donated by the MTA Transportation Foundation to six schools.
The foundation, a nonprofit organization established to develop and support innovative programs, chose the colleges based on their high proportion of minority and disadvantaged students.
One in 14 new engineers in the state come from Cal Poly Pomona.
“The donation of computer equipment will help to ensure that tomorrow’s engineers will get the best education possible,” said Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alatorre, MTA chairman.
