A gun battle that began before noon in an apartment and spilled out to the street left two men critically wounded Wednesday.

“There were numerous shots fired” in the 500 block of Anna Drive, Anaheim Police Sgt. Steve Rodig said. The bullets penetrated the walls of adjoining apartments occupied by adults and children, police said.

Several men fled from the apartment afterward. No one has been arrested.

One unidentified man was found lying in the courtyard of the apartment complex and holding a handgun, Rodig said. He had been shot several times in the upper torso.

Another man, 18-year-old Efran Caldrera, was shot several times in the stomach and was found in the street, Rodig said. Both men were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where they underwent surgery.

Hilda Villavicencio, 17, who lives across the street, said: “It was scary because it was in the daytime. Usually, we hear gunshots at night.”
