Phelps’ Passing Helps Irvine Continue Roll, Beat Chaminade : DIVISION IV

Mike Phelps threw three touchdown passes and Tony Mathis scored two touchdowns to lead Irvine to a 35-16 victory against West Hills Chaminade in a Division IV playoff game Friday night at Irvine High.

Second-seeded Irvine (10-1), the defending Division IV champions, advances to the second round Friday against Foothill. Chaminade finished 5-6.

Phelps, Irvine’s senior quarterback, completed 11 of 19 passes for 254 yards.

Mathis scored on a four-yard run in the second quarter and ran 96 yards for a score on the opening kickoff in the second half.

Mathis was Irvine’s leading rusher with 61 yards in 11 carries.

But Irvine, in winning its eighth game in a row, had most of its success in the air.

Phelps’ favorite receiver was Geoff Noisy, who had nine receptions for 176 yards and one touchdown.

Irvine moved out front on its first possession when Phelps connected with Sean Clark on a nine-yard touchdown pass with 8:06 left in the quarter.

Mathis’ four-yard touchdown with 3:31 left in the second quarter put Irvine ahead, 14-0.

Phelps then connected with Noisy on a 68-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left in the first half to put Irvine ahead, 21-0.
