SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

There was no place like home for the Harbor College football team Saturday night.

The Seahawks finished the season with a 30-0 Western State Conference Northern Division victory at Wilmington.

For Harbor, coming off three consecutive road defeats, the victory ended a 4-6 season and a 2-3 record in division play. All four Seahawk victories came at home.

The Seahawk defense, led by lineman Matt Faraimo’s five sacks, had its third shutout.

Harbor, which had scored only nine points in its previous two games, equaled a season-high for points. Jon Williams kicked three field goals, including second-half field goals of 30 and 40 yards.

Shayzar Hawkins rushed for 52 yards in 15 carries and quarterback Rino Marconi completed 11 of 25 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Marconi, a sophomore transfer from Cal State Northridge and San Pedro High, passed for 72 yards and two first half touchdowns as the Seahawks took advantage of Ventura special-team breakdowns to race to a 24-0 halftime lead.

“We just wanted to go out with a bang,” Marconi said. “It didn’t make much of a difference because we lost all the other games, but it was nice to go out with a win.”

For Ventura (0-10, 0-5), the loss sealed the Pirates’ second winless season in six years.

Running back Damon Hill accounted for most of Ventura’s 78 yards, rushing for 63 yards in 14 carries.

The Pirates managed only 24 first-half yards against the state’s fifth-ranked defense.

A 45-yard punt return by Harbor’s Ismael Del Pino to the Ventura five-yard line set up Harbor’s first touchdown.

Three plays later, Marconi and Hawkins combined on a six-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 Harbor lead with 3 minutes 28 seconds to play in the first quarter.

Marconi hooked up with Ralph Martinez on a 25-yard touchdown with 6:20 left before halftime for the Seahawks’ second touchdown. The 53-yard drive was kept alive by an 11-yard pass from Josh Bendick to Jimmy Legaspi on a fake punt.

Harbor increased its lead to 17-0 on a 26-yard field goal by Williams with 2:14 to play in the second quarter. Chris Smith scored on an 82-yard punt return to close out Harbor’s first-half scoring.
