COMMUNITY COLLEGE CROSS-COUNTRY : Irvine Valley Women’s Team Claims Title

The Irvine Valley women’s cross-country team won its second State title in three seasons, finishing 56 points ahead of second-place Orange Coast Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Mayra Medina, a freshman from Laguna Hills High, finished 11th in 18 minutes 45 seconds for five kilometers for the Lasers, who finished with 133 points to 189 for Orange Coast.

Summer Gingrich (19th, 19:16), Donna Proia (29rd, 19:32), Darlene Pruitt (37th, 19:44), Idi Gomez (69th, 20:09), were the other Irvine Valley scorers. Irvine Valley shared the 1991 championship with Mt. San Antonio.

For Orange Coast, Adrienne Sweetser finished seventh in 18:41. Genet Gbregiorgis of Los Angeles Trade Tech won the race in 17:58, edging defending champion Emebet Shiferaw of Riverside, who ran 17:59.

Fullerton’s Teresa Vega finished 24th in 19:25 and Kim Foster of Golden West finished 26th in 19:27.

In the four-mile men’s race, Darin Rabb of Orange Coast finished seventh in 19:49, Fidel Zavala and Jorge Francisco of eight-place Rancho Santiago were 29th and 31st in 20:35 and 20:37 and Dax Baca of Irvine Valley was 39th (20:54).
