OUTLOOK

As Wolfe enters her second year coaching the Fighting Irish, she appears to have no grand scheme. She would just like to finish second in league. But considering some of the key players she has returning, a run for first place could be a reality. Last season, the Irish went 18-8 overall, 10-4 in league. With 5-foot-9 Williams coming back at forward along with Kitagawa at guard and Gutjahr at the other forward position, Wolfe is in the enviable position of having some experience on the court. She expects Kitagawa to come into her own this year, possibly earning all-league honors. Other players who might make a difference are sophomores Prochaska and Westall, who will most likely make their way onto the court more often. For the long term, the team has some good players on the sophomore and junior level who, if they stick with it, will provide some good depth for the next two to three years. In addition, Wolfe said, the team has plenty of quickness, speed and plays good defense. “We can apply the pressure on defense,” Wolfe said. But, as is the case with all the teams in the Garden Grove League, Wolfe sees size as the major problem for the Irish.
