OXNARD : Teen-Ager Wounded in Drive-by Shooting
Police have few clues to follow on what they described as a “brazen” gangland drive-by shooting that seriously wounded an Oxnard teen-ager on Hughes Drive in Oxnard early Friday morning.
Before the 17-year-old was shot, police had been called to the area, responding to complaints that gang members riddled the area with bullets about midnight. When police arrived in the neighborhood, residents pelted them with rocks and bottles.
Forty minutes later, police responded to another report of shooting in the area. Police said when they returned to the area the 17-year-old was on the ground bleeding from at least four bullet wounds. Witnesses told police it was a drive-by shooting.
“It’s pretty brazen to shoot up an area when you know police are around,” said Oxnard Police Cmdr. Jamie Skeeters.
Skeeters said witnesses and residents were uncooperative, leaving officers few clues. The teen-ager remains in serious condition at St. John’s Regional Medical Center’s intensive-care unit.
“It’s a typical gang shooting,” said Skeeters. “There might be retaliation, but you never know.”
