WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL NCAA TOURNAMENT : UCLA, Long Beach Seeded First in Regions

Three Southland teams were among the 48 teams selected Sunday for the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament, which will begin this week at campus sites around the nation.

UCLA (28-1) was top-seeded in the West Region and Long Beach State (27-2) was top-seeded in the Northwest Region, and both received first-round byes. USC (21-8) will play host to Radford (25-10) in a first-round match on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center.

The Bruins will play their second-round match Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Wooden Center against the winner of a first-round match between New Mexico (17-10) and Santa Clara (22-9).

The 49ers will play their second-round match on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Long Beach gym against the winner of a first-round match between Pittsburgh (23-9) and George Washington (27-7).

UCLA won its second consecutive Pacific 10 Conference title this season. The Bruins won back-to-back NCAA titles in 1990 and 1991 and finished second to Stanford last season.

Long Beach won its third consecutive Big West Conference championship this season. The 49ers won the NCAA championship in 1989 and have reached the NCAA semifinals the past two years.

Loyola Marymount (23-7), ranked 24th last week, was the only team in the top 25 not to be selected for the tournament.
