OUTLOOK
Walker enters his second season with a group of untested players and only one player with any varsity experience. Darnell Adamson, a 6-foot-4 second-team all-league forward, transferred to Santa Ana Valley. “It was a tough loss,” Walker said. “He was probably the best basketball player we had.” Maciel spent half of the Sunset season with the varsity after starting the year with the JVs. Maciel averaged five points during his varsity stint, and Walker has been pleased with the quickness and leadership he has shown throughout the summer, when he averaged scoring in double figures. Corral, Cruz, Diaz and Fausto all started for the junior varsity last season, and will have to produce if the Saints are to improve upon last season’s four league victories. “It’s just a matter of who’s going to step up,” Walker said. Corral was one of the JV’s leading rebounders and he has shown a good outside shooting touch. Diaz was the best three-point shooter for the junior varsity, and Cruz is a “slasher and cutter to the basket,” Walker said. Fausto, an All-Sunset quarterback for Santa Ana’s football team, might have unpolished skills, but will also see lots playing time. Martinez led the freshman team in scoring and rebounding, and the sophomore shows promise. But Martinez and the other Saints will have to rise for Santa Ana to crack the group of playoff qualifiers.
