Mehlberg to Compete in Regional Meet

Peninsula High’s Molly Mehlberg is among more than 2,200 runners expected to compete in the Foot Locker Cross Country Western Regional Championships on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

The top eight finishers in the boys’ and girls’ races will advance to the national finals Dec. 11 in San Diego. The Western Regional includes runners from 13 Western states, as well U.S. overseas military installations.

Mehlberg placed fourth at the State Division I final Saturday at Woodward Park to lead the Peninsula girls to a second-place finish behind Irvine. Mehlberg ran the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes 14 seconds.

The regionals get under way at 9 a.m., with the seeded races scheduled for 12:25 p.m. (girls) and 1:10 p.m. (boys).

The 15th annual South Torrance Holiday girls’ soccer tournament, featuring nine South Bay varsity teams, will get under way Saturday with pool play at South High.

The 24-team field includes South, Hawthorne, Torrance, Redondo, Mira Costa, Bishop Montgomery, Peninsula, North Torrance and West Torrance. Games begin at 8 a.m. and continue through the afternoon.

Winners of the six pools advance to championship-bracket play Dec. 11. The championship game is scheduled to be played at 3 p.m. Dec. 18 at South.

The South boys’ soccer tournament has been discontinued, ending a successful 25-year run under the direction of Roger Bryant.

The finals of the Great Western Team Cup Volleyball tournament will be played tonight at 7:30 at the Forum.

The four-team, round-robin event features some of the world’s top indoor and pro beach players. Among those competing are Kent Steffes, Mike Dodd, Adam Johnson and Tim Hovland. Information: (310) 419-3207.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will play host Long Beach State at 5:15 p.m. Saturday.

The Lions (1-2) lost to San Diego State, 60-49, in Wednesday’s home opener. Loyola is led by senior forward Sheri Brown, who averages 18 points and 10 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Marlee Webb is averaging 12.5 points and 5.5 assists.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team begins play today in the Cal Baptist tournament.

The Toros (2-4) will meet Biola University at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Dominguez Hills plays Azusa Pacific at 6 p.m.

Toro senior guard Karee Bonde is averaging 10.7 points and junior forward Trimika Jackson is averaging 10.3 points and 9.3 rebounds.

The Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will play at Cal State Hayward today at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Toros (2-0) play at College of Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m.

Marcellus Johnson is scheduled to defend his Penta Continental flyweight title against Roberto Alvarez on Monday night at the Forum.

Johnson, of Washington, is 15-1 with 10 knockouts. Alvarez, of Torreon, Mexico, is 13-0 with two KOs.

Paul Bank (22-7, 11 KOs) is scheduled to fight Pascacio Arementa (20-5, 16 KOs) on the undercard.

The card begins at 7:30.

The 16-city Powerblade Roller Hockey Tour will stop in the South Bay on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday’s games will be played in the parking lot of the Redondo Beach Marina. On Sunday, the games will be at Wilson Park on Crenshaw Boulevard. Each team will have at least five skaters and teams will compete in a round-robin format.

The cost is $15 a player and the tournament will be divided into three age groups: 8-12, 13-17 and 18 and older. Information: (310) 796-0166.

The Hermosa Beach Civic Theater will be the site of two screenings of a Warren Miller film on skiing and snowboarding on Dec. 12.

The first show starts at 6:30 p.m. and the second at 9.

The second annual Peninsula Christmas Basketball Camp will be staged at Chadwick School in Palos Verdes on Dec. 20-22.
