HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Saugus Falls to La Canada in Final

Senior forward Eric Sanchez had 18 points and 14 rebounds on his 18th birthday to lead La Canada High to the championship of the Saugus tournament with a 56-44 victory over Saugus on Saturday night.

Charlie Petit added 15 points, including three three-point goals, for the Spartans (4-0).

Mike Williams came off the bench to lead Saugus (3-1) with 14 points, 11 of which came in the second quarter as the Centurions rallied from a nine-point deficit to trail, 27-25, at halftime.

La Canada scored the last nine points of the third quarter to take a 43-30 lead.

The home-court advantage did not help Saugus, which hit only six of 20 free throws and two of 16 three-point shots.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Glendale 71, Monroe 70--Manny Gonzalez made a layup with four seconds remaining to cap a Glendale comeback in the third-place game of the Saugus tournament. The Dynamiters, who were led by James Fuller’s 17 points and Henrik Bandari’s 15, trailed, 69-59, with 3:25 to play.

Chatsworth 67, San Fernando 53--Tariq Hill paced the Chancellors with 19 points and Trenell Floyd added 17 in the fifth-place game of the Saugus tournament. Jermoe Elliott led San Fernando with 14.

Victor Valley 74, Antelope Valley 68--Raschad Walton scored 22 points to lead Victor Valley to the consolation championship of the Saugus tournament. Antelope Valley’s Derrick Barber had 38 points.

Littlerock 66, La Salle 38--John George had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lobos (2-1) in the third-place game of the Paraclete tournament. Hassan Phillips added 12 points.

San Luis Obispo 62, Crespi 58--Marc Lubaska had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Celts (1-2), who fell in the third-place game of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

Senior center Dino Del Vaglio scored 41 points for San Luis Obispo (2-1).

Pete Soule added 11 points for Crespi.

Fresno Edison 85, Bell-Jeff 70--Senior guard Dan Mancinelli scored 23 points for the Guards (1-2), who fell in the third-place game of the Morro Bay tournament. Raffi Margossian added 12 points and Marc Nouh 10.

Buckley 66, Oakwood 56--T. J. Jackson scored 21 points and had seven steals to lead the Griffins in the championship game of the Buckley tournament.

L.A. Baptist 61, Carpinteria 47--Matt Bergeson had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Jeff Baumsteiger had 11 points and nine assists to help L.A. Baptist improve to 2-0.

Rancho Verde 63, Verdugo Hills 46--Chan Cornish led the Dons (1-2) with 16 points and Mike Sessions added 10 in a Canyon Springs tournament consolation game.

Pacific Christian 50, Village Christian 45--David Gustafson had 15 points and six steals for Village Christian (1-3) in a consolation game of the Charter Oaks tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Alemany 68, Mater Dei 48--The Indians (4-0) won the championship of their tournament behind Kelly McKay’s 22 points and seven steals.

Samantha Rigley added 18 points and Zevette Mitchell and Carly Funicello combined for 21 rebounds.

Alemany never trailed and pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring Mater Dei, 21-10.

Village Christian 53, Notre Dame 36--Sophomore forward Lindy James had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Crusaders (3-0) to the L.A. Baptist tournament championship.

Jeanne Beauchamp added 13 points and six assists for Village Christian, which also received 10 points from Trisha Palmquist and 10 rebounds from Sarah Sutton.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 4, Chaminade 0--Kelly Hom scored two goals to lead the Falcons (2-1) to a nonleague victory at home.
