GLENDALE : Alex Theatre Passes Its Final Inspection
The Alex Theatre passed its final hurdle of city inspections Tuesday, signaling the completion of Glendale Redevelopment Agency’s yearlong $6.5-million renovation project at the historic site, officials said.
“They’re officially in business,” said Gloria Droke, a customer services representative for the city.
The final stamp of approval for the 68-year-old former vaudeville stage and movie house comes just three weeks before a planned New Year’s Eve gala at the theater.
Without the use and occupancy permit, city officials would have had to scramble for a special conditional use license to legally house people in the theater, said Glendale Redevelopment Agency Director Jeanne Armstrong.
It’s been just over a year since the Glendale City Council decided to renovate the Alex. On Tuesday, city officials removed yellow tape surrounding the front entrance to the building and passersby were able to walk around the theater’s 1940s-era box office and look through the front entrance gates to the 1,452-seat facility.
The theater is slated to open for business Jan. 27.
